Internships

Public Service Internship Program

The Public Service Internship (PSI) Program is a professional, civic engagement and leadership development program that provides aspiring leaders an opportunity to serve, engage and empower immigrant communities across the City of Atlanta.

Each year, the Mayor’s Office of International and Immigrant Affairs – Welcoming Atlanta offers a hybrid internship program that allows interns to participate virtually and/or onsite to gain valuable learning experiences about serving immigrants and Atlanta’s international population.

Undergraduate, graduate and recently graduated students are welcome to apply. Once accepted, interns are paired with a staff member and tasked with specific foci related to their career and educational aspirations.

Our applications for Academic Year 2024-2025 Public Service Internship positions are now closed. Please check back in Spring 2025 for summer internship opportunities.

The Public Service Internship Program provides undergraduate and graduate-level students from all majors with service-learning opportunities and valuable exposure to municipal government. PSI interns learn firsthand how local government works and contribute to the design, implementation, and evaluation of ongoing projects.

Additional enrichment opportunities include attending professional development seminars and interacting with senior staff, local civic organizations, advocacy groups, business leaders, and partner organizations.

The South has an immigrant population of over 13 million, and growth in this region has surpassed even that of the Northeast and the Midwest, (Pew Research Center 2015). Immigrants are increasingly attracted to thriving urban economies, rising standards of living, and a more inclusive “New South” culture. During the Public Service Internship Program, interns will participate in initiatives, projects, and discussions, while building strong relationships to better understand the issues affecting immigrant communities. Today, 848,960 immigrants reside in Atlanta, or 14.1% percent of the total Atlanta Metro area population, (New American Economy 2019).
